Summer 2010 Book Challenge

June 10, 2010

For this summer, my best friend and I began to compete in a slightly exciting head-to-head reading competition. Whoever reads the most books this summer will prove herself to be the ultimate bookworm in our circle of friends.

Right now, I’m in the lead with 9 books stacked against her 4.5. Here is my current completed-books list:

1) Running With Scissors by Augsten Burroughs

2) Miss Marks and Miss Woolley by Anna Mary Wells

3) No one belongs here more than you by Miranda July

4) The 6th Lamentation by William Broderick

5) Blink by Malcom Gladwell

6) Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris

7) The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

8) Jerusalem 1913 by Amy Dockser Marcus

9) Little Bee by Chris Cleaves

I think it’s funny how fierce and competitive this challenge has become. It’s nothing like an athletic event, where a lot of training has to take place, and strength and endurance are the key factors to winning. Instead, it’s just the sheer will of wanting to spend more time with a book than with anything else. But we have always enjoyed scholarly activities over atletics (her more so than me, an avid runner).

But it is still seriously scary to compete against her in a book challenge, or scrabble.
